Race Rules

    INTRODUCTION

The following rules cannot cover all possible situations that may arise during a produced show, nor can they regulate all administrative questions. Where cases are not precisely regulated by a Rule, it should be possible to reach a reasonable decision by looking at the Rulebook. This Rulebook assumes that the Show Management, Arena Owners, and hired staff have the necessary competence, sound judgment, and absolute objectivity. Too detailed a rule might deprive the shows producer his/her freedom of judgment and thus prevent her/him from finding a solution to a problem dictated by fairness, logic and special factors.

By entering, you agree to hold harmless Tin Can Tango Productions, LLC, sponsors, staff, or participating facility in event of death, theft, loss, or damage. By entering, you are acting as an agent for any horse you enter at this event.

    COMPETITION RULES

    1. A TIN CAN TANGO PRODUCTION barrel race is a timed event using three (3) identical barrels set in a cloverleaf pattern. Barrels can be made of plastic or steel, but must be 55 gallon barrel size with closed ends.
    2. ALL CONTESTANTS must sign a liability release prior to competition.
    3. Electronic timers must be used whenever possible.
    4. The starting gate or gates must remain the same throughout the entire event.
    5. The start/finish line and the barrel positions should be permanently marked and must remain the same throughout the entire event.
    6. Barrel patterns at a TIN CAN TANGO PRODUCTION must and will meet the following standards:
    a. The first two barrels must be a minimum of 15 feet off the side fence.
    b. A minimum of 30 feet between the third barrel and back fence.
    c. A minimum of 30 feet between the time line and the first barrel.
    7. Ground conditions:
    a. The ground conditions within the arena must remain consistent throughout the event. The ground around the barrels will be reworked and leveled after each 10 or fewer contestants have competed.
    b. Ground will be worked with a ground tool pulled by some type of motor vehicle. Hand raking is NOT acceptable.
    8. When contestant crosses the starting line, time will begin.
    9. Contestants must attempt to make the fastest run possible any obvious attempt to “pull-up” or pace your horse will result in disqualification.
    10. A contestant will be given a “NO TIME” for missing the pattern. If your horse breaks pattern, you MUST exit the arena and NOT complete the pattern. You may ask for a free exhibition after the OPEN is completed to correct your horse. This is so that the ground remains fair for those in the drag. A “NO TIME” will be given for knocking over a barrel. A “NO TIME” will be given if a barrel is knocked over and it sets up again on either end. Touching a barrel, including to keep it from falling is permitted.
    11. A contestant will be given a “NO TIME” if the horse or rider falls during the run in which the pattern is broken, or if the rider falls off the horse. Horse and rider must cross the time line together.
    12. In the event of a timer failure, the contestant will be given the following options:
    a. If no barrels have been knocked over prior to timer failure announcement, the contestant may opt for a re-run right then, or at the end of the barrel race.
    b. The contestant may also NOT choose to re-run and request their entry fee be refunded.
    13. If a barrel is moved off its marker, the barrel must be reset prior to the next competitor’s run.
    14. A contestant will be disqualified for running out of turn. It is the contestants responsibility to know his/her draw position.
    15. Contestants should be ready to compete when their name is called. A contestant will be given a total of 3 calls, if contestant is not present at the gate they will be disqualified. Failure to start the clock within five (5) minutes of their first gate call will receive a “NO TIME.”
    16. Contestants may ride any horse, regardless of ownership, and may ride as many horses as they choose in a class. Horses may be ridden in any order the rider chooses. A horse may not be shown by more than one person in a class. (Except where the family rule applies-See Rule 17.)
